moving UP in the world

As of this weekend, Ruth has been moved from her mattress on the floor to her bottom bunk of the bunk beds. Again, God provided her with such peace and ease of transition. We are amazed at how well she has taken each new step.

Four and Counting

At least for a little while, my parents can say they now have FOUR grandchildren (we'll make it five before too much longer). Recently, my sister delivered a healthy and happy baby girl, Emily Marie.

Ruth has "reluctantly" relinquished her rights as the baby of the cousins...

Congratulations Doug, Kim, William and Gabriella on your newest family member!!!

Paraguayan at Heart

Many of you who have visited us are familiar with empanadas-- one of our favorite Paraguayan foods to make and eat. Though I have made them many times since she has been born, yesterday was the first time Ruth showed any interest in eating them. She was a fan, to say the least...

Family Practice (good humor)

After more than 5 years of marriage, and almost two kids, we have decided it is time to find ourselves a family practitioner. We searched our insurance website, prayed about some of the doctors we found there, and later today Cameron will go to visit one of them for a routine check-up/interview.

In this process, we thought it would be good to compile a list of questions that we want to ask. This morning, I sent Cameron a list of questions I felt would be important to have addressed. In turn, he sent me his list. Below is a sampling of each list:

(FYI: for those of you who don't know, Cameron has become an avid biker. He bikes to work, 10 miles each way, 3-4 times a week)

Sample of Kristy's list:
What hospitals is he affiliated with?
What happens for his regular clients when he is out of the office for an extended period of time?
How does he encourage preventive health measures rather than reactive medicinal treatment?
Are antibiotics his first resort in treatment, or does he pursue other options when available?

Sample of Cameron's list:

- If you are 150 yards out with an uphill lie and you are in between clubs, do you try and rip it with the lower iron or do you club up and take an easier swing? (This is to see what his gut instinct is when the pressure is on.)

- Have you ever hit a biker with your car? (This is a question of personal safety, because if he has done it once, who is to say he won’t do it again.)

- What bone lies between the upper leg bone and the lower leg bone? (If he says anything but knee bone, then according to my dad he is not that smart of a doctor.)

Day for Dad

Currently, our church meets on Saturday in a facility owned by a partner church of ours. This allows for us to have our day of ministry and service on Saturday. So, Sundays are all about family and rest. We saw no better option for Father's Day than to stick to the same routine.

The day started with Cameron playing soccer (typical Sunday morning), after which he came home to a lunch of favorites: Papa John's pizza and homemade salsa with chips. After lunch, he and Ruth both took a nap--a rarity for Cameron! The afternoon brought more than five hours of relaxing on the lanai: talking as a couple, reading the paper, watching a thunderstorm roll through, and playing with Ruth in the puddled remnants. In the evening, we went to the local ice cream shop on the corner where dads were given free cones for Father's Day.

All in all, I think Cam enjoyed not doing much of anything, and yet also feeling like he had accomplished more than he does on some of his busiest days at the office.

Ruth and I are tremendously blessed to have this man in our lives. I look forward to seeing what an amazing job he is going to do in raising our son!

Here's hoping your Father's Day was filled with as much family joy and laughter as ours was...

Corn on the Cob

Ruth's favorite summer treat!

Making the Switch

It's a funny feeling watching your child grow up. Somehow you relish and despise the same moments all at once.

Last night, Ruth spent the first night in her "big girl" room and in her "big girl" bed. The room is furnished with twin bunk beds, and last night Ruth took the first step in the process: sleeping on a twin mattress on the floor next to the bunks.

We were ready for protests, a late night, and even having to cuddle with her until she drifted off to sleep. Planners that we are, we had thought of every possible problem that might occur, and the solution to fix it.

The one thing we hadn't thought of, was inevitably what happened...she went right to sleep! Doesn't she know how much we needed her to fuss and cry and insist on our presence in the room? Isn't she aware that, at times, our very existence as parents hinges on her need for us? The nerve... really!

In truth, we thank God for His provision in giving Ruth ease and peace through this transition. She is an amazing gift in our lives, even if she does keep growing up ;-)
